Just as with the arcade version of this game,
I'm surprised nobody else did this already.
This is a port of "Final Fight" to the computer
that was used to develop it, which means apart
from some compensation for the lack of the
Zilog Z80, it's nearly arcade perfect. This
extends to the soundtrack with the X68000's
native sound hardware, which is almost
identical to the arcade version's soundtrack.

One exception is that the instrument samples
are of much higher quality. The result feels
like a different soundtrack altogether. In
particular, the arcade and X68000 versions of
"Round 5: Bay Area 3" feel like night and day.
("Bay Area 2" is missing the weird sample
near the loop, too.)

Another exception is that the mixing is
better, too. The FM and sample instruments
have a more balanced volume, so it's easier
to hear some of the FM melodies over the
percussion samples. For example, you can hear
a bassline early on in "Round 4: Industrial
Area 1" that's nearly inaudible in the arcade
version.

There is one flaw with this soundtrack,
however, and it is one that you can't hear in
this pack. In the arcade version, the samples
were handled through the Oki MSM6295, which
allowed for four channels of ADPCM and thus
allowed for sound effects to play with the
percussion running in the background. The
X68000, however, natively used the Oki
MSM6258, which had only one channel of ADPCM.
As a result, the programming is faced with
playing either sound effects or sample
instruments on that one channel at any given
point. The soundtrack thus ends up not quite
perfect for gameplay, because the sample
instruments can get cut off by the sound of
your punches and vice versa.

Without that, however, this is a must-listen,
and a recommended addition to your
collection. Enjoy!

Note that I am not sure who handled music
duties on the X68000 version. The credits are
identical to the arcade version's, listing
only "Youki-chan's Papa" (Yoshihiro
Sakaguchi) for Sound, so I don't know who put
in the improved samples for the hardware
soundtrack or created the optional MIDI
arrangements available if you have a Roland
MT-32 connected to your unit (but which
cannot be logged to VGM). Regardless, all the
composers are credited identically to the
latest version of my arcade "Final Fight"
pack.

For a bit of trivia, several of the Sound IDs
in the X68000 version, used in this pack's
tags, are also used as the names of some
tracks on "Final Fight -G.S.M. CAPCOM 3-",
the old soundtrack album from 1990, which was
what I used in the original version of the
arcade "Final Fight" pack.
